Coming back home after a wholesome, hectic day and jumping into bed as soon as possible, sounds perfect, right? But before going to bed we suggest you put in a little extra effort to get repaired, rejuvenated skin the next morning.
Do you know when your skin care products work best? The answer is while you sleep. After being exposed to different environmental factors like UV rays and pollution throughout the day, a night skincare routine aims to repair and rejuvenate the skin. At night, Our body’s blood flow and temperature increase, enhancing skincare products’ absorption and effectiveness. Which makes the skin more receptive to active ingredients. That’s why night is considered the ideal time to apply skin care products that contain potent ingredients, as they can penetrate deeper and work more efficiently without interference from environmental aggressors.
Want to get glowing skin but getting perplexed about where to start? Don’t worry. I’ve got you covered. In this article, I’ll help you to create an easy, basic and not-so-time-consuming night skincare routine with the essential steps tailored to your skin’s needs. Let’s get started!
Double cleansing
The first mandatory step in your night skincare routine should be double cleansing. This is essential to remove your makeup and dirt, oil, or impurities accumulated on your skin throughout the day and prepare your skin for your skincare products to penetrate better.
First step: Whether your skin is acne-prone or not, cleansing oil can be a good option. As you know oil dissolves oil, a cleansing oil will dissolve the oils clogged in the pores of your skin. It ensures your makeup, sunscreen and excess oil are thoroughly removed without excessive rubbing or tugging that can irritate the skin. If you don’t use any makeup or stay inside most of the time, you can also choose micellar water to remove impurities from your skin.
Second step: Now wash your face with a mild, gentle cleanser to remove any residue left from the first cleanse. And then pat your skin dry with a clean towel.
Tone your face with a hydrating toner
Is your skin dry, dehydrated, mature or showing ageing signs? Then you can apply a hydrating toner after cleansing your face. It helps to rebalance your skin’s pH level and works well. You can skip it if you want. But we suggest using a hydrating toner containing ingredients like peptides to get better results.
Pour a small amount of toner onto a cotton pad or your palms and gently swipe it across your clean face and neck avoiding the eye area.
Use an essence
We don’t suggest everyone use essence or we are not saying it is mandatory either. But if you have active acne or acne scars on your face or if your skin is dry and dehydrated, then you can go for a snail mucin essence. Snail mucin helps to improve the skin barrier and reduce the irritation or burning sensation in the face.
Exfoliate weekly
If your skin requires exfoliation, then apply an exfoliant weekly once or twice. Remember not to over-exfoliate as it can break skin barriers. If you have pigmentation on your skin and you want to lighten it or excessive oil causing clogged pores, try to use an exfoliant containing ingredients like salicylic acid, mandelic acid, lactic acid, AHAs and BHAs according to your skin’s concern.
Swap your serum application with an exfoliant weekly, once or twice. And don’t use any other active ingredients after using the exfoliant that day. Just apply a moisturizer (without retinol) after using an exfoliant and you’re done for the night.
Use a serum
You cleaned your face and prepared your skin for the next step! And here comes the doers, serums! Serums are packed with active ingredients designed to target specific skincare concerns.
We suggest choosing your night skincare serum containing one of these two ingredients, either peptide or retinol. People with sensitive, acne-prone skin, or those whose skin gets irritated on retinol usage, should choose a peptide-based serum. If your skin is not sensitive to retinol, you can choose a retinol-based serum. Retinol and peptide both have excellent anti-ageing properties with numerous skin benefits.
Apply eye cream
The skin around your eyes is delicate and more prone to signs of ageing. You may notice wrinkles around your eyes even before in any other areas of your face. So an eye cream that can help address issues like dark circles, puffiness and fine lines should be included in your nighttime skincare routine.
Choose an eye cream with ingredients like caffeine or peptides. Apply a small amount with your ring finger and tap gently around the orbital bone.
Moisturize your skin
You have applied your toner, serum or other skincare products, now it’s time to seal all the previous layers of these products in your skin by using a moisturizer.
There’s a misconception that people with oily skin don’t require moisturizer. But do you know that skipping moisturizer signals your oil glands to secret more oil? Whether you have dry skin or oily skin, applying moisturizer is mandatory. It will hydrate your skin and create a barrier to prevent moisture loss.
Choose a moisturizer based on your skin type. For dry skin, a rich, creamy moisturizer is ideal while those with oily skin may prefer a lightweight, gel-based formula. Apply evenly over your face and neck.
Don’t forget to use a lip balm in your night skincare routine to moisturize your lips too.
