Especially in the hot, humid weather. So I always had to seek ways to fight back against the daily frizz assaults on my hair.
Seeking solutions for how to fix frizzy hair? Then you’ve come to the right place. In this article, I am going to share some tips and tricks that I’ve been following effectively to tame my unruly hair with you and some mistakes to avoid to help keep your hair frizz-free. But before discussing solutions, let’s start off by talking about what causes frizz in the first place so that you know how to fight it. Let’s begin
What causes frizz anyway
Hair mainly gets frizzy due to the lack of moisture in the hair shaft. So naturally, dry hair is prone to frizzy hair. Now, how does frizz happen in dry hair? Let’s say you have dry hair, or your hair becomes dry after applying heat styling tools or harsh chemicals. Now you go outside and it’s humid. As the air is humid and has a lot of moisture in it, it’s very easy for your hair to absorb the moisture from the air, causing your hair shaft to swell up and become frizzy.
How to fix frizzy hair
Like every other haircare concern, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. But fear not. Here are some simple yet effective solutions that helped me and I am sure will help you too, to fix your frizzy hair.
Try reverse conditioning
You are probably wondering, what exactly reverse conditioning is. In this method, a conditioner is applied to your dry hair 10-15 minutes before washing your hair with a shampoo. This prevents the shampoo from stripping away the natural oils of your hair while shampooing and keeps your hair moisturized.
Oil your hair well
Regular hair oiling can be your remedy for frizz-free hair. If you don’t want to use conditioner, apply hair oil to your dry hair 30-40 minutes before using shampoo. It will make a protective layer around your hair shaft and prevent the shampoo from stripping away the natural oils of your hair.
Choose your shampoo as per your hair type
Ensure your hair stays hydrated by using a moisturizing shampoo, designed for your hair type. If your hair is oily, look for a gentle, nutrient-rich, clarifying shampoo. If you have a dry scalp, choose a shampoo, containing ingredients like glycerine, argan oil, shea butter or coconut oil which will help nourish and hydrate your hair.
Don’t shampoo your hair daily
The main concern here is to keep your hair hydrated and damage-free to fix your frizzy hair. But using shampoo too frequently can strip off the natural moisture of hair and leave it dry and dehydrated. Aim to use shampoo two to three times a week.
Apply a leave-in conditioner
When I run out of time before going out or can’t get enough time to condition my hair before washing, leave-in conditioners always come to the rescue. It helps to keep my hair moisturized all day long.
After washing your hair, apply a leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture and smooth the hair cuticle. Focus on the mid-lengths to ends, where frizz is most prevalent. It will make your hair smooth and protect it from the outer environment.
Use a deep-conditioning hair mask once a week
Give your hair a treat with deep conditioning at least once a week. Try using ingredients like coconut oil or argan oil. Or if you want you can find something in your pantry too, to make your own DIY hair mask! Apply only from the end to the middle of your hair to prevent an extra greasy scalp.
Use a touch-up hair wax when outside
Sometimes when I go outside with perfectly smooth hair and right after a few minutes it starts to frizz, I use just a little bit of hair wax. And this is truly a miracle. If you find stubborn flyways, gently skim only a teeny-tiny bit of hair wax over the frizzy area. It will weigh down the frizzy hair and make the top of your hair perfectly smooth.
A small hack! You can also use a hand cream in case hair wax is not available to touch up your hair. It will work well.
Limit the use of heat styling tool
I know in our daily hectic schedule, it’s not always possible to wait for natural air drying of hair or sometimes when going out for a hangout or party, your hair may require a new style. That’s why I am suggesting limiting the use of heat-styling tools instead of completely avoiding them. So If you must use them, do so occasionally with a heat protectant spray beforehand to minimize the damage but don’t make it a part of your daily routine. Excessive heat styling can dehydrate and damage the hair, which exacerbates frizz.
Most importantly, while blow-drying, use a diffuser attachment in a low-heat setting to help limit the amount of direct heat and forceful air from hitting your hair.
Use a silk pillowcase
Cotton pillowcases usually cause friction and contribute to frizz. Swap your cotton pillowcase for a silk or satin one to help reduce friction while you sleep. You can also protect your hair by loosely braiding it or using a silk or satin hair wrap or bonnet.
Stop feeding your hair alcohol
Be careful while choosing your haircare products. If you find the word ‘Alcohol’ in the ingredients list, make sure you don’t use it. Why? Because it will create more frizz in your hair. Alcohol is over-drying and it’s going to damage your hair even more.
Hands off the hair
I know, I know it’s tempting to play with your hair but every time you run your fingers through your hair, you cause friction. This friction can lift the cuticle, leading to more frizz and breakage over time. So if you want frizz-free hair, you must stop touching it.
So still finding it difficult to tame your frizz? Just start following these tips, and trust me, you’ll soon say goodbye to frizz once and for all!
