At some point in life, we all experience hair problems like hair thinning or hair damage regardless of gender. So the question is, is maintaining healthy hair possible without a proper haircare routine? No, nope, never!

But fear not. In this article, I am going to share the basic, easy-to-follow hair care routine for men that will help you extend your healthy, strong and gorgeous hair era. But before proceeding to the next step, you must identify your scalp type so that you can design your hair care routine according to your own unique needs. Let’s begin

    Know your scalp type

You need to know your scalp type first to choose the correct product for your hair. Normally our scalp type falls into one of three categories: dry, oily or normal. Which one is yours? How to find out? Easy.

If your hair gets greasy at the base after 3-4 days of washing, then you have a normal scalp type. If your hair is dry, scaly and frizzy,  even after 3-4 days of washing, then you have a dry scalp. If your hair gets oily or greasy the evening or the next day after you wash your hair, then you have an oily scalp.

You can also check it using a tissue paper. Take a tissue paper and simply tap it on your scalp. Do it 1-2 days after you wash your hair. If the tissue shows nothing, then you have a dry scalp. If oil blots, then you have a normal scalp type. And if it becomes transparent, then you have an oily scalp.

    Hair care for men

As I said before, no exaggeration here. I believe less is more. So let’s check out the simplest hair care routine for men with these 5 simple yet effective steps.

Trim your hair every 6-8 weeks

Like many people, are you also afraid that regular trims will deter your hair growth?

Trust me, it won’t. Trimming doesn’t inhibit hair growth. Instead, it eliminates split ends and prevents breakage, which will make your hair less prone to damage, allowing it to grow longer and healthier. Additionally, when you trim your hair, it removes the oldest part of the hair shaft and stimulates the follicles to produce new, stronger hair.

So don’t forget to visit your salon once every 6-8 weeks.

Hot oil massage twice a week

I know, talking about oil massage is too cliche. But can’t help suggesting. Whatever your hair or scalp type is, regular hot oil massage can be the game changer in your hair care routine.

When you massage your hair with hot oil, it will increase blood circulation around hair follicles, provide essential nutrients, stimulate hair follicles from resting to growth phase and speed up healthy hair growth.

You can choose coconut oil, olive oil or even mustard oil. These all are great choices for hair care. Warm the oil first and then gently massage it into your scalp. Leave it for 30-40 minutes and then wash it off with a mild shampoo and a conditioner.

Apply twice a week to see the magic of this traditional hair care solution.

Shampoo and conditioner: 2-3 times a week

You definitely know that shampoo is for cleaning your hair. It removes excess oil and dirt from your scalp, cleans your hair and helps to maintain your hair hygiene. However over-shampooing can strip the hair of its natural oil, leading to dryness and potential damage. So be careful about it. Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo 2-3 times a week according to your hair type. If you are concerned about your dandruff, use an anti-dandruff shampoo once a week.

Shampooing is done, now time for conditioning. This one is often overlooked by men, but what I call skipping conditioner is a haircare sin. After applying shampoo, following up with a conditioner is mandatory to replenish moisture and nourish your hair. It will make your hair more manageable and reduce frizz.

    Post-shower hair care: drying

If you followed the previous steps, congratulations! You are halfway towards your great hair. Hair washing is done, now it’s time for post-shower haircare.

Avoid vigorous towel drying, as it can cause hair breakage and frizz. Gently pat your hair using a microfiber towel to remove excess water and let it dry. Air drying is best but if you are using a hair dryer, make sure you set the temperature to a low heat setting to help limit the amount of direct heat on your hair. Use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying to shield your hair from damage.

    Styling with the right products

Styling your hair is where you can really let your personality shine. But is it only about appearance or something more than that?

You can leave your hair alone only after using a comb. Or you can use a hair serum as a leave-in conditioner. But if you prefer a sleek, polished style or a tousled, textured look, there’s always a product for you. Just remember that every product you use on your hair has a direct impact on your hair health. So whatever style you want to try, styling products should be suitable for your hair type. Experiment with pomades, waxes, gels or creams until you find out what works best for you.

For dry hair, creams and pomades are generally the best option, as they tend to be more moisturizing and can provide the necessary hydration. And for oily hair, gels and waxes are more suitable. They won’t add extra moisture to your hair and will help to control the natural oils.

See! Maintaining hair care for men is not always that hard actually. Just follow these 5 basic steps along with a healthy diet plan and healthy lifestyle, and make your every day a good hair day.
